(MH)

Feux (2001, revised 2003) was written for the Molinari Quartet at the request of Olga Ranzenhofer and with the assistance of the CALQ. Essentially, the work is centered around the pitch G and consists in a series of short variations and interludes which are derived from a founding theme and from the material provided by expanding intervals. Recalling the dialectics of destruction/creation inherent to the fire element, the musical material is scanned from a variety of angles, at times riddled (burned) by silence and at times re-generated, evolving from dissonance to consonance, from a general state of fragmentation to a state of melodic « totality »... Towards the end, the founding theme is expressed by the first violin, before a concluding gesture that is reminiscent of the initial « setting ablaze » of the instruments. In a word, a music whose ashes gradually return to an original state of chanting matter. (MH)
